あなたたちのことを見守っている、といった一見すると立派な、愛情深い理由づけによって監視社会化が進んでいくことは、まず間違いのない道筋だろう。美しい名目の背後には、別の目的がある。その可能性は、相手が強大な権力であるほど疑ってかかる必要がある。

A society slides into surveillance under reasons that look, at first glance, admirable — even loving. We are watching over you. That path is all but certain. Behind a beautiful pretext, another purpose. The greater the power that offers it, the more that possibility has to be doubted.

ディストピアの構成要素の一つとして、人類は「自然」を「野蛮」なものとして管理対象にする、という点が挙げられる。それはたとえ「破壊」にせよ、あるいは「保護」にせよ、同じように人類の管理下に置こうという発想が根底にあり、人間のなかの野生性もまた、管理下に置かれることになる。

One of the elements that make up a dystopia: humanity casts “nature” as something “savage,” and therefore as something to be managed. Destroy it or protect it — either way, the aim is to bring it under human control. And the wildness within human beings is placed under that same control.

ディストピアは、ディストピアが到来する直前までしか探知できないのかもしれない。オルダス・ハクスリーがオーウェルに送った手紙にもあるように、隷属している状態を自ら愛するように仕向けることこそ、ディストピアたるゆえんとも言えるのだから。とすれば、ディストピア状態においてなお作動するディストピアへの抵抗の言葉とは、一体どんなものになるのだろうか。

Perhaps we can detect a dystopia only until just before it arrives. As Aldous Huxley suggested in his letter to Orwell, what makes a dystopia a dystopia is precisely that it leads people to love their own servitude. If so, what would a language of resistance sound like — words that still work even from inside the dystopia?

徐々に、「一言」や「一行動」が、たとえ些細なものであっても、相手の全部になっていく。たった一つの汚れでその部屋の全てが耐えきれなくなる潔癖症のように。たった一つの「予兆」が全体になって見え、そして抹消したくなる。寛容でなければ──相手の複雑性にも、自身の複雑性にも──「人間」は消える。

Little by little, a single word, a single act — however trivial — becomes the whole of the other person. Like a compulsive cleanliness for which one stain makes the entire room unbearable. A single “sign” comes to look like the whole, and then one wants it erased. Without tolerance — for the other’s complexity, and for one’s own — “the human” disappears.
