Telescreen

A device placed in every home and on every street corner, broadcasting propaganda while it watches people’s movements and conversations at the same time. Its sound can be turned low, but never fully switched off.

来歴

テレスクリーンとは、ジョージ・オーウェルの小説『1984年』に登場する架空国家オセアニアで広く普及している、双方向型の監視装置を指す。受像機と送信機が一体となったこの装置は、支配体制が市民の生活や言動を絶え間なく監視し、同時にプロパガンダを流し続けるための道具として機能している。

その本質は、空間における「プライバシーの解体」にある。テレスクリーンは個人の住居から街角に至るまであらゆる場所に設置され、人々は自らの発言だけでなく、表情や声の調子、わずかな身振りに至るまで監視の対象となり、思想警察による監視への恐怖の中で暮らしている。市民が自由にテレスクリーンを停止することはできず、「見られている」という前提そのものが日常の一部となっている。

こうした絶え間ない監視は、人々に自己検閲を内面化させ、反逆の兆候を行動へ移す以前の段階で抑え込んでいく役割を果たす。テレスクリーンは、物理的な監視装置であると同時に、監視されているという意識を人々の内面へ浸透させる。テクノロジーが権力と結びついたとき、私生活だけでなく思考や振る舞いまでも支配の対象となり得る社会を描いた象徴的な装置と言える。
